Work flow
Double diamond
Many designer follow either design thinking or double diamond and both have strong merits. I favour the double diamond simply because it is what I know best and the effectiveness of it structured approach delivers consistent, well researched and grounded outcomes
Brief and task categorisation
With out a strong, well grounded and clear brief no project can hope to succeed and hit it’s goals. The key to any project is strong a foundation and so defining the goals, research needs, objectives, task type, resources, expectations etc with SA’s, developers and business stakeholders are crucial steps before any research is started.
Discovery & Research
Once the task has been defined as a strategic, tactical or operational the we can understand how big the diamonds will be that we need to work on. Defining the relevant research and establishing what we already know, what resources we have internally or where to source the knowledge we need is the beginning of the first diamond
Define
With all the information needed to create a compelling design solution the push back against any controversial design decision that we take well be back with research and justification. We can also use this phase to establish a key list of criteria that can agreed on and signed off, preventing design loops later on.
Develop
Having established a clear set of design criteria and decisions we are clear to move to ideate how we envision the general layout to be. A greyscale grey frame, when delivered to the correct stakeholder, can uncover misalignment between stakeholder expectations and is a crucial step to prevent wasted development resources
Deliver
With the solution validated through iterative development and stakeholder sign-off at each stage, we are ready to move into the final phase of the diamond. Delivering a high fidelity, fully considered design to developers is not simply a handoff — it is a continuation of the process. Thorough documentation, annotated components and clear interaction states ensure that what has been carefully researched, defined and developed is built as intended, closing the loop between design vision and delivered product.
